What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is a combination of "hack," which means creative problem-solving or building something quickly, and "marathon," which highlights the intense, extended duration of the event. It’s a collaborative, hands-on experience where participants brainstorm ideas, develop prototypes, and present their work. However, don't worry about being an expert—hackathons are a great opportunity to learn, innovate, and have fun with your friends! Do I need to be good at programming?
Not at all! If you've taken CE311K (Introduction to Computer Methods) or CE377K (Data Science in CAEE), that's great—it could give you a helpful foundation. But if you haven’t taken these courses or don’t have prior coding experience, no worries! We’ll provide basic Python programming training during the event. Plus, you’ll have support from our amazing graduate student coding mentors. They’ll be there as your hackathon pacemakers, ready to help you tackle challenges and keep your progress on track.
What should I expect?
By February 21 (Friday):
Sign up as an individual or as part of a team. If you sign up individually, you will be grouped with others who share similar interests.
By February 28 (Friday):
The final team assignments will be distributed. If you indicate that you have no prior experience with Python, we will hold office hours to assist you in installing Python on your laptop. Additional details will be provided via email.
February 28 (Friday):
Attend the check-in and introduction session in person. If you have other commitments during this time, inform Dr. Lee in advance. During this session, Dr. Lee will explain the event logistics and provide open-ended CAEE-related problems. Your team must select a topic by Saturday morning to work on throughout the day.
March 1 (Saturday):
Participate in three scheduled check-in sessions with Dr. Lee and/or mentors (each session lasts about 2 minutes per group) at 9:30 AM (Topic check), 1 PM (Code check), and 4 PM (Prototype check). Outside of these times, you can work flexibly and drop in and out if needed for small commitments. Mentors will be available on rotation to support your progress. Enjoy free pizza while you code!
March 2 (Sunday):
Deliver your team’s final presentation (approximately 10 minutes) and join the award ceremony and group photo session to celebrate completing the hackathon!
