2024 CAEE HACKATHON: CODE THE FUTURE WORLD!

September 20th from 5 PM – 7 PM | September 21st 22nd from 9 AM 5 PM
Deadline: September 13th at midnight

Who is eligible?
Undergraduates in CAEE. Grads can be mentors for the hackathon teams (please email)

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a collaborative coding event where individuals or teams work together on a specific project or challenge within a set time frame. However, this isn't your typical hackathon. While coding skills can be beneficial, our focus is on innovative solutions in civil engineering that can be applied to real-world problems. We encourage a multidisciplinary approach, welcoming ideas that blend engineering, technology, environmental science, and urban planning.

Do I need to be good at programming? No! CE311K is sufficient! We are interested in solving civil engineering problems. We’ll have mentors guide you to achieve your objectives.

Do you offer any training?
Yes we do! We will offer ad hoc training sessions to cover different topics such as data analytics, refresher to Python, AI/ML, web apps, and visualization training during the hackathon so if you are stuck, help is just a training session or a mentor away.

Do I have to be there the whole time?
No. We will be around. You can drop in and out if you have some small commitments during that time. We understand. But be there for the final presentation at 4 – 5 PM on September 22nd (Sunday).

What to Expect

Participants can expect a dynamic environment where they'll be challenged to think critically and creatively. You will have the chance to:

  • Collaborate with fellow students across disciplines to brainstorm and develop solutions.
  • Learn from best in class researchers through training sessions, gaining insights into cutting-edge technologies and approaches in civil engineering.
  • Innovate by applying theoretical knowledge to practical challenges, potentially laying the groundwork for future research or startup ideas.
  • Compete for prizes and recognition, showcasing your solutions to a panel of judges.

Expectations

  • Team Formation: Participants can sign up as individuals or teams. If you’re signing up individually, you will be placed in a team with others who share a similar focus.
  • Solution Development: Teams are expected to develop a prototype or a detailed plan that addresses at least one of the hackathon themes. Creativity, feasibility, impact, and presentation will be key judging criteria.
  • Presentation: At the end of the hackathon, each team will present their solution to the judges and audience. This is your chance to shine and demonstrate how your ideas can contribute to sustainable civil engineering practices.

Why should I do it? Dive into innovation and make a real-world impact at our hackathon, enjoy free pizza while you're at it!
