A trio of faculty members in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering are taking the next step in their careers.
Blair Johnson, Krishna Kumar and Pawel Misztal have been promoted from assistant to associate professor. Their promotion will become official in August.
Johnson’s research focuses on the turbulent flows of coastal and near-shore wave breaking. Johnson aims to break down the physics of wave movements to create laboratory models that can be used to make more informed predictions about environmental trends like glacier melting, mixing of desalination brines in the ocean, shoreline erosion after hurricanes and other environmental events.
Kumar is an expert in modeling for infrastructure, geomechanics and natural hazards like earthquakes, landslides and more. He is also leading an initiative to bring together civil engineers, cyberinfrastructure professionals and experts in artificial intelligence to better understand and protect our virtual and physical infrastructure.
Mistzal’s lab performs novel air quality measurements outdoors, indoors and from individual sources. He is part of a multi-institutional team tasked with studying the long-term health effects of wildfires.
