Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil Brazil is the largest country in Latin America and the fifth largest in the world, with an area of more than 3.2 million sq. miles. Brazil has much to offer in diversity, culture, exoticism and outstanding natural beauty. Brazil has established technologically sophisticated industries particularly in the fields of telecommunications, electronic data processing, biotechnology and new materials. Brazilian engineering is known by the Itaipu hydroelectric power plant, deep water drilling technology, and the application of concrete in urban construction as showcased by the buildings in Brasilia, the nation’s capital. UFPE is located in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco. The city has a population of almost five million, and is one of the main cities of northeastern Brazil. It is the destination of many migrants from the region's countryside, and struggles with many urban infrastructure challenges related to its growing size. The northeast is known for its natural beauty, and Recife is located on the coast, near some of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) UFPE opened in 1946 and is now one of the country's most important institutions of higher learning. It is the most prestigious university in the Northeast and North regions of Brazil. The university has over 24,000 students, including about 3,000 graduate students. Department
of Civil Engineering The UFPE Department Civil Engineering began offering a
Master's degree in 1992 and a Ph.D. in 2000. The graduate program is
rated 01: 5 (M/D) by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. The department's
areas of specialization are: Geotecnia; Estruturas; Tecnologia Ambiental
e Recursos Hídricos; Transporte e Gestão das Infraestruturas
