To create and visualize a wave group go to the "Multi-component Waves" applet and set the heights of Waves 1 and 2 equal to each other, and the height of Wave 3 equal to zero. Then make the period of Wave 1 equal to a desired number (say 4 secs) and the period of Wave 2 slightly different from that of Wave 1 (say 3.8 secs). The wave group can be seen at the bottom of the screen (Compound Wave).

Note 1: The vertical scale is magnified for clarity.
Note 2: The color contours show the wave pressure in a non-dimensional way.
Note 3: Check that a wave crest moves faster than the wave front, until the wave crest disappears as it crosses the wave front.

Check the Wave Forces on Cylinder (Linear Theory) applet. Using the applet try to assess the importance of viscous forces for small values of H/D or for large values of H/D (H=wave height; D=pile diameter).
