LABS start the week of September 10, 2018, and will be held EVERY week. Make sure you visit the Lab website and print the corresponding documents BEFORE each lab.

1st class: Thursday, August 30; Reading assignment (from the textbook): pp. 1-11

• NO Homework due the first week of class!
• Pictures of applications of fluids
• See what can happen to a bridge if you do not account for the wind forces!
• The Greek alphabet
• A Table of commonly used units in Fluid Mechanics - Tables and Figures (to be provided with your Tests and Final Exam)
  • Q1: An object weighs 1 lbf (on earth). What is its mass (in slugs and in lbm)? (the answer will be given in class)
  • Q2: How much 1 kg or 1 slug weigh (on earth)? (the answer will be given in class)

2nd and 3rd classes (September 4 & 6); Reading assignment (from the textbook): pp. 14-18 and pp. 33-48

• Tables and Figures from the Appendix of the textbook (revised, as it will be provided in the exams)
  • Q3: How are the density, the specific weight, and the specific gravity of mercury on the moon, related to those on the earth? g_moon=1/6 g_earth (the answer will be given in class)
  • Q4: Verify the value for the density of air at p=1atm and 20 deg C, with that given in Table A.3. What will the density at p=2 atm (absolute) and 20 deg C?
