• Summing of non-carcinogenic effects

  • Hazard Index (HI) = HQ1 +HQ2 + HQ3 + ... + HQn
    • HI > 1 = further chemical-specific evaluation required.
    • HI < 1 = acceptable risk, no action required from a human health perspective.
  • several simultaneous exposures to sub-threshold exposures could result in adverse health effects.
  • sum only for chemical(s) of concern having adverse effects on the same organ.
