Industrial sewer networks exist in every chemical manufacturing facility and petroleum refining facility to carry process wastes to a treatment facility. They can be broken down into two parts, as shown above.

ISBL units are specific process units where a chemical or type of chemical may be manufactured. Several ISBL units may drain into the main sewer lines that make up the OSBL unit, which takes the discharge to a treatment facility.
