CAEE student talking to recruiter at Industry Open House

Industry Open House

Jumpstart Your Career

Industry Open House (IOH) isn’t just a career fair; it is an industry consortium dedicated to informing students about career opportunities within the fields of civil, architectural and environmental engineering.

What to Expect

Industry Open House connects CAEE undergraduate and graduate students with industry professionals working in the civil, architectural and engineering fields. We encourage students to ask questions about potential career paths, research topics, areas of interest and beyond.

Students will have the opportunity to visit several different tables assigned to our industry participants and make connections throughout the event.

  • What’s the difference between the Industry Open House and the Engineering Expo?
Industry Open House is dedicated specifically to CAEE students to connect them with professionals in the fields of civil, architectural and environmental engineering. The Engineering Expo is open to all engineering students and industry professionals across all disciplines.
  • What’s the difference between the Industry Open House and a career fair?
While typical career fairs focus on job and internship openings, Industry Open House is intended to be an educational experience for our students! Engineers can also be lawyers, entrepreneurs, advisors, philanthropists and more – opportunities are endless, and we want our students to see this firsthand from industry professionals.

In addition to learning about internships and job openings, students are encouraged to ask questions about research topics, potential career paths, recommended classes for specific career paths, and more!
  • Who can attend the event?
IOH is open to both undergraduate and graduate engineering students with an interest in civil, architectural and environmental engineering.
  • Do I have to be registered in order to attend the event?
While we appreciate registration for an accurate count when planning, registration is not required when attending the event.
  • What attire is recommended?
This event is not formal, but business casual is recommended.
  • Do I need to arrive right at the start of the event? Can I leave early?
Participants can come and go at any time – it is not required that students stay for the entire duration of the event.

What to Bring

As this is a networking event with potential employers, we recommend students bring their resume/CV and any other materials they may need to participate in impactful conversations. Business casual dress is encouraged.

If it’s your first time meeting industry professionals or you’re not sure what to talk about, use one of our conversation starters!

  • What kind of career do you have?
  • What is the best part, or your favorite part, of your career?
  • What cities have you lived in? Which was your favorite to work in?
  • How did you choose your career?
  • What is your educational background, and how did it help you choose your career?
  • What are some of the engineering projects that you’ve worked on in your career?
  • What are you most proud of in your career?
  • What was your favorite subject or professor while at UT?
  • If you had to do it over again, what would you do differently while at UT?
  • What is the best piece of advice you could give me as a CAEE student?
  • Did you get work experience while your were a student, and if so, what did you do and how did it help you?
  • What is your favorite thing about Austin?
