Drs. Kevin Folliard and Maria Juenger received the Wason Medal for Materials Research for a paper co-authored with three UT alumni (Dr. Kyle Riding, Assistant Professor at Kansas State University; Dr. Anton Schindler, Associate Professor at Auburn University; Dr. Jonathan Poole, CTL Group). The journal paper, entitled “Effects of Construction Time and Coarse Aggregate on Bridge Deck Cracking,” was published in American Concrete Institute Materials Journal in September 2009.
The Wason Medal is awarded annually by the American Concrete Institute to a refereed technical paper based on its original research work on concrete materials and their use, or a discovery that advances the state of knowledge of materials used in the construction industry. The Wason Medal will be presented to the authors at the ACI Convention in April 2011 in Tampa, FL. The research described in this paper was based on work performed on TxDOT Project 4563 (Heat Generation in Mass Concrete; Principal Investigator: K. Folliard) and resulted in the development of ConcreteWorks, a software program aimed at optimizing concrete mixtures for durability and extending the service life of concrete elements. The research team previously was awarded the Top Research Innovations and Findings for 2005 by the Texas Department of Transportation for the development of ConcreteWorks, which is now being used by practitioners and researchers worldwide.
