One of the Nation's Best
We are proud to have many highly-recognized instructors and researchers in our department, including 16 faculty members who are National Academy of Engineering (NAE) members. Six of the NAE members are pictured with Dean Gregory Fenves when the UT Tower was lit in their honor (left to right): Kenneth Stokoe, James Jirsa, Michael Walton, Earnest Gloyna (Emeritus), Fenves, Danny Reible, and David Fowler. The lighting of the Tower has been a UT tradition for more than 70 years, and the idea originated with a UT engineering professor.
We think that our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and industry friends make CAEE one of the nation's best. You may have already come to a similar conclusion from the Success Stories and Student Profiles on this website. But, when you are looking for a place to go to school, you want to know how it compares to others you may be considering. Lots of different things can be considered, and so published rankings attempt to standardize the comparison for you. You may know that such rankings can compare engineering universities, colleges or schools within those universities, departments of those colleges or schools, programs that the departments offer, and whether those programs are for undergraduate or graduate students.
The magazine US News & World Report is one of the publications that produces standardized rankings of academic institutions, their departments, and programs. The following are the relevant CAEE rankings from the 2011 America's Best Colleges edition, published in August of 2010:
- #3 Civil Engineering (graduate program specialty)
- #4 Civil Engineering (2010 ranking) (undergraduate program, among schools where Ph.D. is the highest degree)
- #4 Environmental (graduate program specialty)
- #7 Environmental (2010 ranking)(undergraduate program, among schools where Ph.D. is the highest degree)
